Vol. 139 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price of Maizemeal.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he is aware that average retail price of maizemeal is £38 15s. per ton, while the most recent cost of maize is £27 15s. per ton c.i.f. Dublin and that this represents an excess charge of at least £4 per ton on maizemeal; and, if so, whether he will take steps to relieve pig producers of this levy, which amounts to approximately 28/- per pig of ten stone deadweight.

Mr. Walsh

The Deputy is aware that maizemeal of different grades of fineness is on offer and that it is sold in varying quantities.

While some maize has been purchased at approximately £27 15s. per ton c.i.f. the price has hardened and the cost of the most recent purchase is approximately £28 15s. per ton.

The price of maize sold by Messrs. Grain Importers was reduced from £34 to £32 per ton on 9th March and if the import price falls there will be further reductions.

I do not propose to exercise official control over the price of maizemeal since any person can purchase maize from Messrs Grain Importers in six-ton lots delivered at his nearest railway station.

Is the present price of £32 chargeable by Grain Importers to anyone who wants a six-ton load?

Mr. Walsh

Yes.

Does the Minister agree that the retail price of £38 15s. as related to a grain price of £32 seems excessive.

Mr. Walsh

It seems excessive, but there is no control.

I do not want a control if the Minister agrees with me that it seems excessive.
