Vol. 139 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Possession of County Mayo Commonage.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will now state when possession will be taken of Lappalagh Common, Glenisland, County Mayo, or what progress has been made.

I am not yet in a position to say when this area will be acquired as the title difficulties have not yet been resolved.

Would the Minister say what steps his Department are taking to have the matter cleared up? The matter has now been going on for four years. While I know his Department is not to blame for the major delay, somebody is, and I think the Department should take steps to clear it up one way or another.

I do not know whether the Deputy wants me to indicate who, I think, or who he may possibly think, should be blamed for the delay, but I am glad to know that he realises that the Department is not responsible. There are 280 acres of land held in undivided shares by 14 tenants and the total price of the land is £360. The cost of proving the title is obviously the stumbling block. The State solicitor has done his utmost. I shall try again to get the vendors' solicitor to clear up the question of title. I am afraid there is nothing further I can do about it.
