Vol. 141 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions Oral Answers. - North Galway Turbary Survey.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state whether a survey of the extensive turbary tracts in North Galway has been made for the purpose of having erected a power station thereon; and, if so, the conclusions arrived at; and if such a survey has not been made, whether he will recommend that appropriate steps be taken in that regard.

I am informed by Bord na Móna that a number of bogs in North Galway have been investigated to ascertain their suitability for machine turf production. An area which is extensive enough to be considered for the large-scale mechanical production of turf for use in a power station exists near Ballygar. Major arterial drainage difficulties are anticipated, however, in the development of bogs in this area, and this drainage problem is at present under consideration by the board.
