asked the Minister for Defence if he will state how many retired ex-Army personnel are, by virtue of the housing shortage in Dublin, still living in Army barracks in Dublin and furnish a table showing the length of tenure of the various personsso affected; and, further, if any of the persons so affected are debarred from receiving their pensions or are subject to a reduction in them on this account.

Twenty-eight discharged members of the forces and four families, being dependents of deceased ex-members, are overholding married quarters in military barracks in Dublin. The duration of such overholding is as follows:—

All pensions, gratuities or moneys due to ex-soldiers who continue to occupy married quarters are withheld to cover the daily charge for overholding quarters as well as any amount which might be due to public funds for loss, damage or deficiencies in the quarters or furniture. The amount of the later cannot be determined until the quarters have been vacated, and accordingly any money due cannot be paid while the irregular occupation continues.
