Vol. 142 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Dublin School.

asked the Minister for Education if he is in a position to state when it is proposed to proceed with the erection of the new school at Shankill.

Mr. Lynch

Negotiations for the acquisition of the site to which I referred in my reply to the Deputy's previous question on the 15th May, 1952, had to be abandoned owing to the legal and other difficulties involved.

The reverend manager is negotiating for another site, but until it is acquired and certain other necessary preliminary arrangements have been completed the Department cannot sanction a grant for the erection of the new school. I am, therefore, unable to say at present when it is likely that work on the construction of the new building will be commenced.

I am aware of the pressing need for the provision of a new school to replace the present school and my Department will continue to make every effort to expedite the case.

What stage are the negotiations at now?

Mr. Lynch

According to the information here the solicitors are in close negotiation. I believe some developments are likely very shortly but there are some difficulties with regard to the acquisition of a cottage and its possible demolition. The diversion of the E.S.B. lines is also involved.
