Vol. 143 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Hospitals and Sanatoria.

asked the Minister for Health if he will give particulars for each year since 1945 of the total value of the contracts entered into for (a) the building of new public authority hospitals and sanatoria and (b) the extension and renovation of existing public authority hospitals and sanatoria.

To furnish the information in the form and detail requested by the Deputy would involve a considerable amount of work for my Department and, more particularly, for local authorities. It may perhaps largely meet the Deputy's purpose if I indicate that since the beginning of 1949, when the present hospitals building programme came into operation the estimated total amount of thecommitments actually entered into in respect of public authority hospital works of any appreciable size was (a) £10,950,000 for new hospitals and sanatoria and (b) £2,800,000 for important extensions and renovations of existing hospitals and sanatoria.

asked the Minister for Health if he will give particulars for each year since 1945 of the total amount (a) granted and (b) paid to voluntary hospitals and voluntary organisations from (1) Government funds, (2) Hospitals' Trust Funds and (3) local authority funds towards (a) the building of new voluntary hospitals and sanatoria and (b) the extension and renovation of existing voluntary hospitals and sanatoria.

As the reply is partly in the form of a tabular statement, I propose with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to circulate it with the Official Report.

The reply is as follows:—

(a) The Deputy has asked separately for particulars of certain funds granted and paid to voluntary hospitals and voluntary organisations. I have taken it that the reference to "granted" is in the sense of allocated or earmarked. The Deputy will appreciate that considerable research would be involved in referring back to every undertaking given on a variety of individual projects involving such a large number of hospitals and organisations. In many cases, the negotiations would proceed over a number of years and it would be difficult to assign to a particular year the actual allocation of grant. Furthermore, in a number of cases over this period there would be confirmation of earlier undertakings or confirmation with modification as to amount. I trust, therefore, that the Deputy will feel satisfied with the information that over this period grants from the Hospitals' Trust Fund to voluntary hospitals and organisations have been allocated or earmarked as follows: (a) £7,000,000 approximately for new hospitals and sanatoria and (b) £3,500,000 approximatelyfor extension and renovation (including equipment) of existing hospitals and sanatoria. These figures would include some proportion of the grant-in-aid of the Hospitals' Trust Fund which will continue to be necessary for some years but how much it would be impossible to say as the grant-in-aid is provided for the general purposes of the fund.

No local authority funds have been allocated for building projects by voluntary hospitals and organisations.

(b) Payments from Hospitals' Trust Fund since 1945 for voluntary hospitals and voluntary organisations for (a) the building of new hospitals and sanatoria and (b) the extension and renovation (including equipment) of existing hospitals and sanatoria.
