Vol. 143 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Irish-Born Residents in Britain.

asked the Taoiseach if his attention has been drawn to recently published statistics concerning the number of Irish-born residents inthe County of London, England, and if he is in a position to make available to the House particulars of such statistical information.

asked the Taoiseach if he will request the Central Statistics Office to examine the British census and other returns for the purpose of extracting therefrom information concerning the number, sex, age and occupation of Irish people resident in Britain.

I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 3 and 4 together.

In addition to the recently published report of the Census 1951, England and Wales, dealing with the Administrative County of London, to which, presumably, the Deputy refers, there have been published a number of reports of the 1951 census dealing with the cities and counties of Scotland, which have been appearing at intervals since about mid-1952, and also two reports based on the tabulation of results of a 1 per cent. sample extracted from the census records, which were published over 12 months ago. These volumes, which I propose to have made available for the Oireachtas Library, contain particulars of the numbers enumerated in different areas classified by birthplace and by sex. They do not, however, give cross-classifications by age and occupation; and, from the programme outlined for the publication of the results of the Census 1951 for England and Wales or for Scotland, it does not appear probable that such cross-classifications will be given.

I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to circulate in the Official Report a statement (i) giving the estimated totals of persons of Irish birth in Britain in 1951 as given in the reports dealing with the 1 per cent. sample already mentioned, and (ii) giving the numbers of persons of Irish birth enumerated in 1951 in the Administrative County of London.

Following is the statement:—
