Vol. 144 No. 7

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Importation of Sheep Pelts.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state the number of sheep pelts imported by the various tanneries in the Republic for the years 1951, 1952 and 1953, indicating the number imported by each of the firms concerned.

The number of sheep and lamb skins (undressed) imported in 1952 was 5,491, and the number imported in 1953 was 39,396. The corresponding figure for 1951 is not available since there was not in that year an individual import list heading for such items, and the imports, if any, were brought to account under a general heading. Particulars relating to the business of individual firms cannot be divulged.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that the persons distributing the pelts to the fellmongers are the directors of the tanneries? I have a complaint from a tannery in my constituency of unfair treatment, and I am prepared to send in to the Minister the full facts in connection with it. I agree that there should be someone in control, but I suggest it is an independent authority that should be in control and not the directors of the tanneries.

The Deputy's supplementary question has nothing to do with statistics.

If I send in the complaints from this tannery will the Parliamentary Secretary inquire into it?

I do not think the matter is one that refers to the Taoiseach's Department at all.
