Vol. 145 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price of Eggs.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he is aware that as low as 1/3 per dozen has been offered for eggs in County Cork; and if, in view of the importance of the poultry and egg industry to rural Ireland, he will take steps to see that an economic price is paid now as otherwise production will be greatly reduced resulting in very high prices in the future.

Mr. Walsh

The answer to the first part of the question is "No". As regards the second part of the question, the egg and poultry markets are completely free and prices for these products are competitive. At present, the producer's price for eggs is determined by the prices obtainable on the British markets. which are, unfortunately, poor at the moment, but I am not without hope that they will improve in the early future. Meanwhile, satisfactory prices continue to be available to our producers for poultry.

Is the Minister aware that in parts of South Cork on last Friday week 1/3 a dozen was offered for eggs by collectors at a time when the prices at which eggs were being sold in cities and towns were comparatively high?

Mr. Walsh

I had one report and I am having that investigated at the moment. We are keeping this matter under review all the time.
