Vol. 146 No. 1

Election of Ceann Comhairle.

A Chomh-Theachtaí, tairgim go dtoghfar Pádraig Ó hÓgáin, Teachta do Chontae an Chláir, ina Cheann Comhairle. Bhí sé ina Cheann Comhairle againn le trí bliana anuas agus stiúraigh sé obair na Dála go dílis, cneasta agus thug sé cothrom na féinne do gach Teachta. Fé mar is eol don Dáil freisin, bhí sé ina Leas-Cheann Comhairle ar feadh deich mbliana roimhe sin. Is cúis áthais dom, mar sin, a ainm a chur ós bhur gcomhair, agus tá súil agam go nglacfaidh sibh leis mar Ceann Comhairle.

I am proposing that Pádraig Ó hÓgáin, Teachta for County Clare, be appointed as Ceann Comhairle. He was Ceann Comhairle here with us for the past three years and he gave to everybody his right and was just and fair. He gave general satisfaction. He also, as you know, was Leas-Cheann Comhairle here for a period of ten years. I have great pleasure, therefore, in proposing that he be appointed Ceann Comhairle, and I hope that the appointment will be unanimous.

Aontaimídne, ar an taobh seo, leis an tairiscint.

Question—"That Deputy Patrick Hogan be elected and now take the Chair of the Dáil as Ceann Comhairle"—put by the Clerk and unanimously agreed to.

Cleireach na Dála

Iarraim anois, thar bhur gceann, ar an Teachta Pádraig Ó hÓgáin, comhalta do Dháilcheantar Chontae an Chláir, dul i gceannas ar an gcúigiú Dáil Éireann deag seo.

I now call, in your name, on Deputy Pádraig Ó hÓgáin, member for the County Constituency of Clare, to take the Chair of this, the Fifteenth Dáil Éireann.

Whereupon the Deputies rose in their places and remained standing while the Ceann Comhairle proceeded to the Dais.

Standing beside the Chair, An Ceann Comhairle, addressing the Dáil, said:—

A Chomh-Theachtaí, is mór an onóir dom mé a thoghadh d'aonghuth mar Cheann Comhairle, agus is mór liom mar onóir é. Ní fuiriste dualgais Chinn Chomhairle a chomhlíonadh ach, le cúnamh Dé, déanfaidh mé mo dhícheall iad a chomhlíonadh chomh maith agus atá im chumas, agus gnó na Dála a stiúrú mar is cóir agus is ceart agus cothrom na féinne a thabhairt do gach aon Teachta do réir na mBuan-Orduithe. Tá súil agam go bhfaighidh mé cabhair agus coghnamh ó gach aon Teachta sa Tigh chun mo dhualgaisí a chomhlíonadh mar is cóir. Gabhaim mo bhuíochas leis na Teachtaí go léir as ucht na honóra móire seo a tugadh dom.

Fellow Deputies, it is indeed a great honour to be elected unanimously as Ceann Comhairle of this Dáil and I appreciate it as such. It is not always easy to discharge the duties of Ceann Comhairle, but I will endeavour to do that to the best of my ability and to direct the business of the Dáil as is right and to give fair play to every Deputy according to Standing Orders. I hope I will get the help and assistance of every Deputy on all sides of the House in carrying out my duties. I desire to extend my sincere thanks to every Deputy for this honour.
