Vol. 147 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Extension of Beet Growing.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state whether there is a scheme in contemplation for the extension of sugar beet growing to the Erris area in North Mayo, and, if so, if he will arrange to have the details announced as soon as possible so that small farmers in the area may make the preparations necessary for growing the crop.

The arranging of contracts for the growing of sugar beet is a matter for Comhlucht Siúicre Éireann and farmers in North Mayo who are interested in growing the crop should write to the company for details.

Mr. Lemass

Is there in fact any scheme, as has been stated, for the cultivation of sugar beet in North Mayo areas?

I do not know what the Deputy is talking about.

Mr. Lemass

Is the Minister aware that a Deputy of his Party has been announcing in North Mayo that such a scheme is in contemplation? Is there in fact any such scheme?

If the Deputy would give me particulars of the allegations to which he refers I will have them carefully examined but I am so accustomed to the Deputy's phenomenal capacity for seeing visions and dreaming dreams that I would not care to comment upon them until they had crystallised.

Mr. Lemass

Will the Minister answer this question—does he know of any such scheme?

I would want notice of the question.

Mr. Lemass

You do not know.

I would want notice of the question.

Mr. Lemass

Will you stop the Deputy concerned from trying to fool the people in North Mayo?

If I could persuade the Deputy to desist from brazen effrontery I would regard myself as well employed. I am not conscious of its being manifested by any of my colleagues.
