Vol. 147 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mayo Pier Repairs.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he is aware that it has been alleged that the delay in carrying out repairs to the piers at Glosh and Graughill, County Mayo, has been caused officially, and, if so, if he will state whether this is correct, and, if not, the reasons for the delay and when work is likely to commence.

I have seen the newspaper report referred to. The position as regards Graughill slip is, I understand, that in September, 1953, the Office of Public Works agreed to send representatives to a joint meeting on the site with representatives of the county council to discuss a scheme of improvement proposed by that office and not considered suitable by the council and asked to be informed beforehand of the respects in which the proposed scheme was considered to be unsuitable. The Office of Public Works have not yet had a reply to their offer from the county council.

As to Glosh (or Faulmore) pier, the decision has already been made as stated in reply to a parliamentary question on the subject on 5th March last, that it was not proposed to attempt to repair this pier because engineering advice was to the effect that the structure was beyond repair.
