An application has been received for a grant for the work referred to, and has been rejected because the cost would be excessive in relation to the utility of the work. The two households which would be served by the road have alternative access to the county road.
Will the Parliamentary Secretary have this proposal re-examined on the ground that the information which he has supplied is not strictly in accordance with the facts? Is he aware that he has not adverted to the large number of non-residential tenants who use this road? Is he further aware that he has not adverted to the fact that three dwelling-houses are to be constructed there and that work on these cannot be commenced until this road is put into a proper state of repair? Is he also aware that the local people categorically deny that there is adequate access from any other direction to this district, other than the one in respect of which they want this road repaired? Finally, is he aware that this is a Fíor-Ghaeltacht district?
If the Deputy can supply me with such information I shall be glad if he does so, but that is not the information given to me.
Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that the Deputy has submitted this scheme both as a rural improvements and a winter employment scheme and, under both headings, it has been refused consideration by the Special Employment Schemes Office?
I am aware of that. The Deputy made this application in July, 1953. Our information is that it merely supplies two householders and they have access to the public road by another way, which is only 80 perches longer than the way the Deputy is looking for now. Such a new road would cost nearly £700 and we consider that is out of the question for the sake of just two householders.
Will the Parliamentary Secretary inquire into two aspects of this matter: one, three houses are awaiting the repair of this road; secondly, 15 tenants are prepared to contribute, in addition to what they have already contributed, towards the carrying out of this work as a rural improvements scheme, and these 15 tenants are not served by the alternative route which the Parliamentary Secretary's office seems to think would serve their purpose.
I will have the matter reinvestigated in the light of what the Deputy says, but that is not the information I have here.
I question that information.
