Vol. 147 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Houses for Army and Naval Men.

asked the Minister for Defence whether he is aware that a large number of married Army and Naval personnel on Spike Island and Haulbowline Island are applying for local authority houses, and, if so, if he will acquire sites on the mainland from the local authority to build houses for these men.

The reply to the first part of the Deputy's question is in the negative.

As regards the second part, it is not intended to acquire sites on the mainland from the local authority to build houses for married Army and Naval personnel on Spike Island and Haulbowline Island. The question of providing housing accommodation for married soldiers is constantly under consideration and every effort is being made to solve the problem.
