Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Hospital Sweeps Funds.

asked the Minister for Health if he will state in regard to expenditure from the hospital sweepstake funds in the last ten years (1) the amount spent on new hospital buildings and extensions, and where such hospitals are situated, (2) the amount spent on new equipment for existing hospitals, and what such equipment consisted of, and (3) the amount allocated to hospitals for maintenance costs during each of the years mentioned.

As the information requested by the Deputy contains a lengthy list of hospitals and institutions, I propose with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to circulate the reply for inclusion in the Report.

(1) A sum of £15,296,740 was spent from the Hospitals Trust Fund during the ten years 1st April, 1945, to the 31st March, 1954, on new hospital buildings and extensions. The location of the hospitals and institutions referred to is set out hereunder:

(2) A sum of £132,636 was spent during this period on new equipment for existing hospitals and institutions. This equipment consisted of X-ray plants; sterilising equipment; operating tables; fluoroscopes; electricity generating plants; laundry equipment; kitchen equipment; anaesthetic equipment; laboratory equipment together with a large variety of medical and surgical equipment and furniture. A considerable sum in respect of equipment provided for the new hospitals and extensions would be included under (1) above.

(3) The amount allocated to hospitals for maintenance costs during each of the years mentioned was:—

(4) In the period in question a sum of £2,900,000 was provided by the Exchequer by way of grant-in-aid of the Hospitals Trust Fund.
