Vol. 147 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Mayo: School Transport.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware of the hardships endured by school children from the Sheeaun and Burren areas, Castle-bar, because of the long distance they have to travel to school, and, if so, if he will provide transport facilities for these children.

I am aware that there is a number of school going children residing in the Sheeaun district who have more than the statutory distances to travel to school. The question of the establishment of a transport service to a national school is in the first instance one for arrangement by the local parties. In this case, some difficulty arises from the fact that the children's homes and the nearest suitable school are in different parishes. If arrangements can be made locally to have the children conveyed to the nearest suitable school the question of allowing a grant towards the cost of their transport will be considered.

My Department is further investigating whether suitable arrangements for the provision of a transport service can be made.
