Vol. 147 No. 9

Written Answer. - Transfer of Building Projects.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state how many and what building projects related to the current financial year originally undertaken by the Commissioners of Public Works have been transferred for execution by (1) the Department of Defence, and (2) other Departments, and the total cost of such works in the current year, distinguishing between (a) National Development Fund projects, and (b) other projects; further, if he will state in each case, distinguishing between payments under heads (1) (a), (1) (b), (2) (a) and (2) (b), the total amounts which will be the subject of Supplementary Estimates, and the net value of such projects after allowing for savings already anticipated.

On the assumption that the question relates to building projects which it was originally intended would be undertaken by the Commissioners of Public Works but which were transferred to other Departments the information requested is as follows:—

Total Estimated Expenditure,

1. DEPARTMENT OF DEFENCE:

1954-55

(a) National Development Fund Projects

Nil

(b) Other Projects:

Custume Barracks, Athlone:

New Billet Blocks

£41,000

Dun Ui Mhaoiliosa Barracks, Galway:

New Gymnasium

£15,000

Collins Barracks, Cork:

Ordnance Store

£16,000

Cathal Brugha Barracks, Dublin:

Laundry and Bathhouse

£2,500

2. OTHER DEPARTMENTS:

(a) National Development Fund Projects

Nil

(b) Other Projects:

Carrick-on-Shannon Post Office:

Telephone Cable Terminal Building

£2,000

No Supplementary Estimate would arise in respect of the case included under (2) (b) as the expenditure is being met out of the Telephone Capital Account.

As regards the cases included under 1 (b) I have to refer the Deputy to the final paragraph of the reply given by the Minister for Defence to Question No. 100 on the 17th November, 1954.

Mr. Burke

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I want to raise the subject matter of Questions Nos. 37 and 38 of last Thursday, 25th November, on the Adjournment to-night.

I will communicate with both Deputies in the course of the afternoon.
