asked the Minister for External Affairs whether an application from this country for membership is still awaiting decision by U.N.O. and, if so, when a decision is likely to be reached.
Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - U.N.O. Membership.
Ireland's application for admission to the U.N.O. still stands, although it remains blocked by an objection in the Security Council.
It is not possible to say when a decision will be reached.
Arising out of that reply, may I take it that the Government are leaving no stone unturned to ensure that our application for membership is decided upon at the earliest possible opportunity in view of the urgent necessity of having Partition, with its attendant evils, brought to the attention of U.N.O.?
As the Deputy is personally aware a number of applicants, including Ireland, await admission to U.N.O., but they are being delayed by an objection in the Security Council. Until some solution is arrived at which will overcome that, it is not possible to give an affirmative answer.
Has the Minister any information that the matter is likely to come up for discussion and consideration in the near future?
It is understood it may be raised at this session and if not at the next session which will take place this year.
Has this Government, since it came into office, made a further request to have the matter expedited?
That is a separate question.
