Vol. 149 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Inis Thoir, County Galway, Marine Works.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether it is proposed to carry out marine works at Corr Áit, Inis Thoir, as an alternative to the proposal to improve the island's main landing place, and, if so, if he will make a statement in the matter.

I would refer the Deputy to my answer to a previous question by him on the 1st December, 1954, relating to marine works on Inis Thoir. There is nothing I can usefully add at present to the information already given.

Can the Minister not offer any explanation as to the long delay in coming to a decision on a matter that had reached final form at the date of the change of Government?

The Deputy is very well aware that there was no such thing as a final decision in this matter. There were two propositions put up: one, the repair of the pier and the other, the proposals which were to be carried out in respect of Corr Áit. No decision was taken in the matter but I understand were it not for the personal intervention of the Deputy the decision would have been taken.

Is the Minister seriously suggesting no decision was made in respect of any proposals for Inis Thoir? Is that his statement?

The Minister is undoubtedly correct.

The Minister is undoubtedly incorrect.

I had a file and I offered you a look at it and you would not avail of it.

Both Ministers are incorrect. A sum of £8,000 was sanctioned for Corr Áit. The officers dealing with the matter, who had a report in respect of the landing place, admitted their mistake.

They did not.

Whatever took place in the meantime, the matter is now in a state of suspended animation. It is very shabby treatment for the people of a Fíor-Ghaeltacht area.

The Deputy wanted to get it changed and the Deputy knows the reasons why.

The people of Inis Thoir want it changed. The officers who dealt with the matter want it changed but we will get no decision from the Government.
