Vol. 149 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Land Acquisition and Division.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state, in respect of County Roscommon, (a) what lands are in the possession of the Land Commission, (b) when they were acquired, (c) the amount of money collected in respect of the letting thereof, and (d) when it is proposed to divide them among uneconomic land holders in the surrounding localities.

A statement has been prepared showing all the more valuable estates and holdings on hands in Roscommon together with the dates on which they came into the possession of the Land Commission and I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to have this statement circulated with the Official Report.

There are other lands on hands not included in the statement but these consist of small holdings, some remnants of old estates and large areas of low-quality land which have proved almost unsaleable. In some of these cases the lands are let in grazing at small rents to persons to whom they will probably be finally sold and it would therefore be misleading to include them in the list.

It would be a most tedious affair to extract particulars of all money collected in respect of lettings of these lands since the Land Commission took them over and I would ask the Deputy to be satisfied with the statement that the gross amount collectible for 1954 in respect of the listed lands was approximately £7,400 from which must, of course, be deducted the amount of rates and other outgoings which would exceed £5,000.

It is not possible to say when each of the parcels on hands will be allotted but the Deputy may take it that lands on hands will be disposed of as speedily as possible.

Occasionally one or two estates may be held on hands deliberately while other lands in the same locality are acquired so that a composite scheme may be prepared for the settlement of a whole district. Normally, however, lands are only held on hands for such time as is necessary to prepare a sound scheme and carry out preparatory improvements work.

Following is the statement:—
