asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will ascertain from C.I.E. why interview boards are considered necessary for the selection of candidates for appointment to clerical posts in that organisation, in view of the fact that such interviews are not considered necessary for appointments to similar posts in the Civil Service, and if he will make representations to the board to dispense with such interviews in future.

Under the Transport Act, 1950, the board of C.I.E. are empowered to make their own rules in connection with the recruitment of persons to the clerical grades of the service of the board by means of open competitive examination. The question of whether interviews should be held in connection with such' appointments is entirely a matter for the board.
