asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware of the desire of a number of local authorities, and in particular of the Dublin Corporation, to increase the pensions of their retired employees, and, if so, whether, in view of the small number of people involved and the increase in the cost of living since the current rates of pensions were fixed, he will introduce proposals for legislation to permit such increases.

The position of these pensioners has to be considered in conjunction with that of State pensioners and the total charge on public funds resulting from an increase in pensions has to be taken into consideration. The matter is being examined by all the Ministers concerned and it is not possible at this stage to say what the outcome of that examination will be.
