Vol. 150 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garda Retiring Age.

asked the Minister for Justice whether he is now in a position to make a statement on the proposal to extend the retiring age limit for members of the Garda Síochána.

The matter is still under consideration and I will inform the Deputy as soon as a decision has been reached.

Will the Minister agree that representations were first made to him or his Department in connection with this matter in 1948? Does the Minister not consider that from 1948 to 1955 is sufficient time to enable a decision to be reached on a matter that is of great importance to the members of the Garda Síochána?

Several extensions have been granted to the Gardaí since 1948. A limited number of extensions are also granted from 60 to 62.

Is the Minister aware that there is great dissatisfaction amongst the members of the force over the manner in which this discretionary power of extending the retiring age limit is utilised?

That is an entirely separate question.

While the Chair was speaking, the Minister has spoken. I am glad to hear that the Minister will have that position clarified.
