Vol. 150 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Erection of Schools.

asked the Minister for Education what progress has been made towards the erection of the proposed new national school at Causeway, County Kerry.

A grant has been sanctioned by my Department towards the cost of the erection of a new national school to replace the present Killury National School at Causeway, Tralee, County Kerry.

It is now a matter for the Commissioners of Public Works to make the necessary preliminary arrangements for the erection of the new building. These arrangements will necessarily take a considerable time to complete, but they will be dealt with as expeditiously as possible, having regard to the many other cases on hands which demand attention.

asked the Minister for Education what is the present position in regard to the proposal to erect new national schools in the Ballyphephane area, Cork City.

It is proposed to erect new schools for infants, for senior girls and for senior boys in the Ballyphehane area of Cork City.

A suitable site has been offered for the infants' and senior girls' schools, and sketch plans have been prepared by the reverend manager's architect and have been approved by my Department and the Commissioners of Public Works.

The other arrangements preliminary to the sanction of a grant by my Department towards the cost of the girls' and infants' schools have been completed except that documentary evidence of title to the site which is required in order to enable the premises to be vested in trustees by a lease in the official form is not yet forthcoming, owing to the necessity for completing certain protracted formalities. My Department is actively considering whether there is any way in which the difficulty as regards title might be overcome.

A suitable site has also been offered for the proposed new senior boys' school and sketch plans for the new building have been prepared by the Commissioners of Public Works. The Department is at present in communication with the reverend manager in regard to the other preliminary arrangements which will have to be made before a grant can be sanctioned towards the cost of the new school. Every effort is being made by my Department to have these arrangements completed as expeditiously as possible.

asked the Minister for Education what is the present position in regard to the proposal to erect new schools to replace the existing schools in St. Patrick's parish, Cork City.

A grant has been sanctioned by my Department towards the cost of erecting new schools to replace the existing St. Patrick's Girls' and Infants' Schools, Cork City.

Working drawings and a specification for the new schools prepared by the reverend manager's architect, have been approved by the Commissioners of Public Works, and he has been authorised to arrange for the preparation of bills of quantities. When the bills of quantities have been prepared, the reverend manager will be authorised to invite tenders for the erection of the new schools.
