Vol. 150 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - North Kerry Land Acquisition.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state the lands in North Kerry, which the Land Commission propose to acquire this year for the relief of congestion.

In North Kerry the Land Commission have proceedings in progress for the acquisition or resumption of four holdings comprising 302 acres and they are negotiating for the voluntary purchase of four holdings comprising 594 acres.

These figures do not include several bogs which are also the subject of proceedings and which cover a further area of 381 acres.

Owing to uncertainty of the outcome of acquisition proceedings, it would be quite impossible to forecast the particular holdings which may become available for the relief of congestion in any one year. Furthermore, I have avoided giving details of the individual holdings involved because, in some cases at least, the negotiations in progress are of a confidential nature.

For the Deputy's information I should say that last year the Land Commission had preliminary inspections made of estates totalling 2,577 acres for the whole of County Kerry.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state the lands in North Kerry which it is proposed to acquire this year for afforestation purposes.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I am arranging to circulate with the Official Report a table showing the area and location of offers which the Department has under consideration in North Kerry.

I would like to point out, however, that many of these offers are only in the preliminary stages and may prove on investigation to be unsuitable for acquisition or not to be available for sale. I would also refer the Deputy to my reply to his question of the 27th April last and remind him that for the reasons stated there no guarantee can be given that all or any of these lands will be acquired within this year.

TABLE showing offers of land in North Kerry made to the Forestry Division.
