Vol. 150 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Housing Expenditure.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the total expenditure from public funds, whether local or central, on housing within the State in each of the last five financial years.

As the reply contains a series of statistics, I propose with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to include it in the Official Report.

Following is the reply:—

Total capital issues from the Exchequer for expenditure on housing during the last five financial years were:—

£ million

1950-51

11.20

1951-52

13.14

1952-53

11.68

1953-54

9.81

1954-55

8.91

The figures for the year 1954-55 are provisional.

In addition, capital was raised by Dublin and Cork Corporations through stock issues and mortgage loans as follows:—

£ million

1950-51

5.25

1951-52

5.40

1952-53

4.90

1953-54

1.76

1954-55

4.85

The proceeds of these issues were expended mainly on housing and ancillary services. Of the funds raised by the two corporations by stock issues, £7.39 million was subscribed from departmental funds.

Information is not available in my Department regarding borrowings by local authorities for housing from sources other than those mentioned in the reply, e.g., short-term bank accommodation.

It has been assumed that the Deputy's question relates to capital expenditure and no reference has, therefore, been made to the payments from the Exchequer towards housing loan charges of local authorities or to the current charges in respect of housing which are borne by such authorities.
