Vol. 151 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Transfer of Bank Deposits.

asked the Minister for Finance whether there is any information available in his Department regarding the transfer of deposits to Six-County branches of Irish banks by depositors in the State, following the increase in the English bank rate and, if so, the nature of the information.

There is no information available in my Department regarding the transfer of deposits to Six-County branches of Irish banks.

Arising out of the Minister's reply, is he in a position to make any comment on a statement which appeared in the Press last Friday? The statement was made by Deputy Childers, a former Fianna Fáil Minister, and in it he encouraged small depositors in the Republic to export, or perhaps I should say to take their deposits to Six-County banks and so make money scarce here——

That is a matter in which the Minister has no function.

And it is untrue.

I did not see any such statement, but if any statement were made to that effect, naturally I would deprecate it very much indeed.

It is to be seen in the Press.
