Vol. 153 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cost-of-Living Increase.

asked the Taoiseach if the Government have made any formal decision on matters relating to the cost of living or increased incomes to meet rises in the cost of living, and, if so, if he will state the date of the decision and the details thereof.

This matter is not one for Government decision, and I would refer the Deputy to my statement as reported in columns 223-224 of the Official Report of the debates which took place in this House on the 27th October, 1955.

Can the House take it that the Government as such have not discussed this question of the rise in the cost of living and the consequent demands for increased wages?

The House can take no such meaning out of what I said. It was discussed fully on the vote of no confidence.

Further, can I take it the Government have decided they can do nothing to prevent the cost of living going up or to bring about a reduction in expenditure as they promised?

That is an entirely separate question.

It is a lot of nonsense.

I would ask Deputies to remember that there are 92 questions on the Order Paper and that supplementary questions will not be favoured by the Chair.
