Vol. 153 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Killybegs Fish-processing Plant.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he is aware of the urgent need for the expansion of the existing pilot fish-processing plant at Killybegs, and, if so, whether he has any scheme under consideration for the extension thereof.

I presume the question refers to the extension of fishmeal production. This matter is under consideration and I am not in a position to make a more detailed statement at present.

I am sure the Parliamentary Secretary is aware that the existing plant in Killybegs is capable of dealing with only a limited quantity of fish, particularly herrings and this is totally inadequate to deal with the situation arising out of the recent glut. I am sure the Parliamentary Secretary will agree that the obvious thing to do is to extend the existing plant. I refer to other things as well as to the manufacture of fishmeal.

The matter is under consideration at the moment.

Unfortunately the Deputy has a new Minister for Fisheries now.
