Vol. 154 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Glucose Prices.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the price of (a) imported glucose, and (b) home-produced glucose, and the duty, if any, charged thereon; further, whether persons engaged in the confectionery export trade are entitled to any concessions or remission of duty.

Imported glucose is subject to an ad valorem duty of 37½ per cent. full, 25 per cent. preferential. Home-produced glucose is not subject to any duty.

Immediately prior to the imposition of the duty, the price here of imported glucose was approximately £46 per ton. As the prices in the home markets of the exporting countries were substantially higher, this artificially low price merely represented the price at which foreign manufacturers were prepared to dispose of their surplus production here.

The ex-factory price of home-produced glucose is £52 5s. a ton, less a rebate of 15/- to customers supplying their own drums. The price delivered in returnable drums to customers' premises in Dublin, Cork or Limerick is £54 10s. per ton and £55 10s. to other destinations. The corresponding delivered price in Britain is £56 5s. per ton.

As regards glucose for the export trade, the position is still as explained in the reply given to a question on the same subject on the 9th November, 1955.
