Vol. 154 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rural Electrification.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce when the rural electrification scheme will be extended to the Gorey rural area.

I am informed by the E.S.B. that the Gorey Hill area, County Wexford, was considered for development by the board last November, but was not selected, as the returns for the area did not compare favourably with those for other areas still awaiting development in the Waterford district. The area will be reconsidered by the board in due course and the decision of the board will depend on how the returns for the area then compare with those for other areas awaiting development in the Waterford district.

Would the Minister give the percentage?

I do not think I could. I have not got that information.

I am told it is over 80 per cent.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce when it is proposed to extend rural electrification to the Leugh, Ballycahill and Drombane areas, Thurles, County Tipperary, and whether steps will be taken to have the work expedited.

I am informed by the E.S.B. that the Ballycahill area, which includes Leugh, has been selected for development under the rural electrification scheme and that it is expected that work on the erection of the network in the area will commence within two or three months. I am also informed by the board that Drombane is included in the Clonoulty area which was developed in 1954.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce when it is proposed to extend rural electrification to the Mount Frisco, Dunkerrin and Killea areas, Roscrea, County Tipperary, and whether steps will be taken to have the work expedited.

I am informed by the E.S.B. that the Mount Frisco area, County Tipperary, which includes Dunkerrin and Killea, has been considered for selection by the board on two occasions but has not so far been selected as the returns for the area have not compared favourably with those for other areas still awaiting development in the Portlaoise district. The area will be reconsidered by the board in due course and the decision of the board will depend on how the returns for the area then compare with those for other areas awaiting development in the Portlaoise district.
