Vol. 154 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fish Statistics.

asked the Minister for Agriculture (a) what quantity of the 87,627 cwt. of demersal fish handled by An Bord Iascaigh Mhara on behalf of inshore fishermen was disposed of in the Dublin market, (b) why the appendix to the annual report on sea and inland fisheries, giving particulars of the quantities and kinds of home-caught sea fish dealt with in the Dublin fish market, has been omitted since 1952, and if he will give these figures in respect of each of the years 1952 to 1955, and (c) what quantity of demersal and pelagic fish was disposed of in the Dublin market in 1953 and 1954 by An Bord Iascaigh Mhara.

I am informed by An Bord Iascaigh Mhara that the answer to (a) in the Deputy's question is 66,366 cwt. and that the information requested at (c) is not available from the board's records.

As to (b) in the question, the appendix referred to was intended to show the relationship between the quantities of fish sent to the Dublin Wholesale Fish Market by inshore fishermen and the company which operated a fleet of steam trawlers. The last of these trawlers was withdrawn from service in 1952 and the collection of the information required for the appendix was accordingly discontinued.
