Vol. 154 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Local Authority Officers.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state the number and total annual remuneration of (a) established, (b) unestablished and temporary and (c) part-time officers of local authorities at the commencement of each of the years 1939, 1948 and 1955, or the nearest dates for which statistics are available.

The records of the Department do not give the necessary information in the form required by the Deputy. Returns furnished by local authorities some years ago indicate that at the 31st December, 1939, and 31st December, 1947, the numbers of officers, for whom the Minister for Local Government was the appropriate Minister, employed by local authorities, were 3,360 and 3,998, respectively. It is estimated that at the commencement of 1955 the corresponding figure was 5,250. Separate figures for (a) established, (b) unestablished and temporary, and (c) part-time officers are not available. It is estimated, however, that approximately 10 per cent. of the officers employed were part-time and a somewhat higher proportion were in non-pensionable employment.

Particulars of the total annual remuneration paid to officers are not available but it has been estimated, very roughly, that the 5,250 officers in the employment of local authorities at the commencement of 1955 were paid a total annual remuneration of £2,500,000.

The Deputy might note that the figures quoted do not include local officers for whom other Ministers are the appropriate Ministers.

Do the figures include Dublin Corporation as a local authority?

They include all local authorities.

The figures must be wrong.
