Vol. 154 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - State of Killarney Roads.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware that the roads in the Killarney urban area are in a very bad state and whether he is prepared to allocate a grant to have them put in a reasonable state of repair.

I am aware that the urban roads in Killarney urban district are not in good condition, due to the failure of the urban district council to maintain them properly. It is the statutory responsibility of the council to maintain these roads, but over a number of years they have not been providing sufficient funds for the purpose. The remedy rests with the council, who can provide the moneys, by raising a loan if necessary, to overtake the arrears of maintenance. Grants are not made available from the Road Fund for works of this nature.
