Vol. 154 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Land Acquisition and Division.

asked the Minister for Lands whether the Land Commission have decided on a scheme of allotment for the Saunders estate, Ballina, and, if so, whether any of the adjacent uneconomic landowners and landless men are to be considered for any portion of the estate.

The question would appear to relate to the Beckett estate (formerly Saunders Knox Gore). The estate comprised 414 acres of which 269 acres have already been allotted. A scheme for the remaining 145 acres has not yet been formulated but, when this is being done, the claims of all local applicants will be fully considered.

asked the Minister for Lands whether the lands of Mr. John O'Malley, Clooncondra, Foxford, County Mayo, are to be divided among adjacent uneconomic landowners at an early date.

The Land Commission hope to take possession next month and to allot the lands promptly thereafter. The claims of local smallholders will be fully considered.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state the present position in regard to Land Commission proceedings for the acquisition of the Comyn estate, Miltown, Dysart, County Roscommon.

Fresh proceedings have been instituted for the acquisition of these lands and the Land Commission are in communication with the owner.

asked the Minister for Lands whether the Land Commission have considered the propriety of acquiring the lands of Mr. Joseph Hagan, Cullaghamore, Scramogue, County Roscommon, for division among deserving applicants, and, if so, with what result.

The Land Commission have no proceedings for the acquisition of the lands but the matter has been noted.

Might I ask the Minister if he is aware that Land Commission officials inspected this holding two or three years ago and that the question of its being noted can hardly be reconciled with that fact? In view of the fact that the holdings in the vicinity of this estate are from £7 to £10 valuation would the Minister urge on the commission the necessity for speeding up the decision?

If the Deputy knew as much as I do, he would be aware that the proceedings of the Land Commission have always been in accordance with the strictest rules of humanitarian propriety.

asked the Minister for Lands what is the present position in regard to the acquisition by the Land Commission of the O'Malley farm, Rathconnor, County Roscommon, for the purpose of division among deserving applicants.

The Land Commission have not instituted proceedings for the acquisition of the lands but inquiries are still being made.

asked the Minister for Lands whether the Land Commission have prepared a scheme for the division of the White estate, Brackloon, County Roscommon, and, if so, when it is likely to be put into operation.

I cannot at this stage indicate when this estate will be allotted.
