asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state in respect of each county (a) the area of bog in the possession of Bord na Móna, (b) the average price per acre paid to the former owners, (c) the estimated average tonnage of saved turf which one acre is capable of producing, and (d) the price per ton paid for saved turf last year.

As the reply is in the form of a tabular statement I propose, with your permission, a Leas-Cheann Comhairle, to have it circulated with the Official Report.

Following is the statement:—

Sod Turf:Approximately 600 tons per acre in the case of mountain bogs and 1,000/1,200 tons per acre in the case of midland bogs. These tonnages are at 35% moisture content.

The price of sod turf per ton ex works to the general public in 1955 was 54/6d. up to 26th Sept., 1955 and 57/6d. since that date. For sod turf of 30% moisture content delivered to the E.S.B. generating stations at Portarlington and Allenwood the price fixed for the year which commenced on 1st Sept., 1955 is 50/- per ton at Portarlington and 59/3d. per ton at Allenwood. The price for milled peat deliveries to the E.S.B. has not yet been fixed as deliveries have not yet commenced.

Milled Peat:Approximately 3,500 tons per acre for midland bogs and 2,000 tons per acre for western bogs. These tonnages are at 55% moisture content.
