Vol. 155 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cost of Imported Wheat.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state in respect of each of the years 1953 to 1955 the total cost of imported wheat, and the estimated cost of such imports in the current year.

I propose, with the permission of the Leas-Cheann Comhairle, to circulate in the Official Report a statement showing the total value (c.i.f.) of wheat imported in each year 1953 to 1955. No estimate can be given of the cost of wheat likely to be imported during the calender year 1956. The quantity will depend on the amount of native wheat that the coming harvest will provide. For the cereal year 1955-56, that is for the 12-month period ending 31st August, 1956, imports of wheat other than for seed are expected to come to a total of £3,290,000 (c.i.f).

Following is the statement:—
