Vol. 156 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Free Fuel Vouchers.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare whether he is aware that free fuel vouchers for old age pensioners, blind pensioners, widows, etc., were discontinued this year from 24th March, while those persons in receipt of unemployment assistance, home assistance, etc., were issued with such vouchers on 31st March, and, if so, if he will now recoup pensioners who did not receive vouchers in respect of the latter date.

The operation of the 1955-56 cheap fuel scheme covered a period of 22 weeks. I have ascertained that, through a misunderstanding by the Department of Posts and Telegraphs, vouchers were issued for only 21 weeks to the pensioner class in one area.

I am examining the possibility of having an adjusting issue of fuel made to the persons affected, but the Deputy will appreciate that there are certain difficulties to be overcome.

Will the Minister agree that circulars were sent out to the post offices not to issue those for the 31st March?

I think I have admitted that in the reply. There was a mistake made.

Is the Minister going to compensate the people who suffered for it?

I am hoping that I can.
