Vol. 158 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Transfer of Infants to U.S.A.

asked the Minister for Justice whether he has seen a report in relation to the transfer of babies from Croom Hospital to the United States of America; whether he proposes to take any action in the matter, and if he will make a statement.

I would refer the Deputy to the answer given by me on 10th April to a question about the removal of children from Croom Hospital for adoption abroad in which I stated that I was satisfied that there was nothing irregular or unlawful about this.

I have seen the cross-Channel newspaper report referred to in to-day's question which I consider to be a garbled misrepresentation of the facts.

Has the Minister seen the statements, attributed to a public official, suggesting that children born in Irish cottages are uncivilised? Will the Minister deal in the proper manner with imported newspapers which contain such slanderous attacks on the character of the Irish people?

Will the Minister tell the House what the facts are in this case?

I have already given that information in reply to a previous question. I may say that I agree entirely with what Deputy Desmond has said and I believe that this Government, or some Government, will have to take steps to deal with such newspapers.
