Vol. 158 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Duty on Coal.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the amount of the customs duty on coal; whether, in view of the present high cost, he will consider taking such steps as are necessary to remove this duty, or to allocate to industrial concerns a quota of imported coal free of duty; and if he will state the amount of the yield to the Exchequer in respect of the coal duty.

There is no customs duty on coal of British origin. All other coal is liable to a customs duty of 3/- per ton in accordance with the provisions of the Anglo-Irish Trade Agreement of 1938. As our entire requirements of coal are supplied from British sources, payment of this duty does not arise and it has no effect on the prices paid by industrial or other consumers.
