Mr. J. Tully

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the current rates of wages being paid to the various categories of outdoor workers employed on aerterial drainage.

As the reply is in the form of a tabular statement I propose with your permission, a Oheann Comhairle, to have it circulated with the Official Report.

Following is the reply:—

Drivers of Compressors, Pumps, Concrete Mixers and Stone Crushers, Loco Drivers, Tradesmen's Helpers

2/4d.

2/10d.

DRILLERS

2/3d.

2/9d.

CHARGE HANDS

2/3d. to 2/7d.

2/9d. to 3/ld.

CARTERS

Labourer's rate plus—

8½d. per hour Horse and Cart

5½d. per hour Pony and Cart

4½d. per hour Donkey and Cart

BOY LABOURERS

14 to 15 years £2- 3-6

A week (40 hour week.)

15 to 16 years £2- 8-6

£16 to 17 years £2-13-6

17 to 18 years £ 3- 3-6

VEHICLE DRIVERS

Hourly Rates (normal week 48 hours)

Trucks, Vans, Tractors and Dumpers

up to 2/10d.

Special heavy vehicles

up to 3/0d.

Dozers

up to 3/5d.

EXCAVATOR DRIVERS

Trainees (not in full charge of machines)

Weekly Rates (normal week 48 hours)

GANGERS

up to £9 6s.

FOREMAN

up to £12 4s.

WATCHMEN

17/6d. a night of 12 hours or 1/5½d.an hour.

15/4d. a day of 8 hours, or 1/11d. an hour.

Will the Parliamentary Secretary not agree that the facts are that, while every trade except that of labourer receive at least the local rate, labourers receive a much lower rate?

I do not see how that question can arise from the reply.

Why did he ask the question if he knew the answer?
