asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state, with reference to the present international economic situation, what steps he proposes taking to encourage increased tillage during the coming year, with particular reference to securing adequate crops of wheat and other cereals.

It must be accepted that an increase in the area under tillage during the coming year is essential and I am confident that in present circumstances the farming community will co-operate to ensure that this increase will be secured. As announced by the Taoiseach on 5th October last it is the intention of the Government to maintain stable and guaranteed prices for wheat, beet, milk, barley and grade A pigs. All possible assistance will of course be given by the advisory services to help and encourage farmers in their efforts to increase production.
Five shillings a barrel below the cost of imported wheat.

It is true, unfortunately, that wheat is getting dearer on the world market. It is rather important to see that, apart from the other angle of the international situation, we produce as much as we can here. Is the Minister in a position to say what price inducements will be available to Irish farmers to grow the necessary wheat and other cereals at home?
There is a question in regard to that matter on the Order Paper.
Does the Minister regard a cut of 12/6 as price stability?
