Vol. 161 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Foreign Trawlers off Cork Coast.

asked the Minister for Lands whether he is aware of the losses suffered by fishermen off the West Cork coast in recent times due to the interference of foreign trawlers who damage gear, and fish within the prescribed limits, and, if so, whether he will ensure that adequate steps are taken by his Department to deal with this matter.

Presumably the Deputy is referring to incidents which occurred recently near the Fastnet Lighthouse, I have seen a preliminary report on these occurrences and am having inquiries made in the matter. Pending the result of such inquiries, I am not in a position to say what further action may be taken.

Perhaps the Minister would be able to indicate at a later date what action will be taken?

If I have a satisfactory answer, I will communicate it to the Deputy.

This recent incident was a very big one. There are a number of these incidents occurring over the years and I think the State should take more adequate steps to look after these fishermen. This is not an isolated case.
