Vol. 161 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Lucan Cottages.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that 80 council cottages are required for the accommodation of qualified families in the Lucan area; and if he is prepared to approve of this number immediately in order that tenders can be invited by Dublin County Council.

I am not aware that 80 council cottages are required in the Lucan area. Following a joint examination of the housing position in this area in July last by officers of the council and the Department, it was agreed that the provision of 40 houses would meet the urgent requirements of the area and that the position could be re-examined when these houses had been completed and let.

Were the 40 cottages intended only to meet urgent requirements? I think the Minister stated he was not aware that 80 cottages were needed.

The 40 houses represent the number agreed between the county council and the Department as being requisite for the needs at that time.

When these were provided, if it was found that further houses were necessary, the matter could then be considered.
