Vol. 161 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Manufacture of Army Badges.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs whether the badge of the Irish Army is at present manufactured in Britain, and, if so, whether he intends to have it manufactured here.

Many different types of badges are used by the Army and most of them are obtained from Irish manufacturers. An order was, however, placed with a British firm some months ago for supplies of an infantry badge of new design which I assume is the one the Deputy has in mind. The order for these badges, imports of which are subject to a levy of 60 per cent, full (40 per cent. preferential), was placed following general competition in which the Irish manufacturers capable of producing this badge were included. The Irish manufacturers will continue to be given opportunities of tendering for these requirements and I hope that the prices quoted for future supplies will enable the orders to be placed with them.
