Vol. 161 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cork Road Fund Grants.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state immediately what grants will be made available to the Cork County Council from the Road Fund for the current financial year, as the delay in clarifying the position has caused much unemployment among roadworkers in the county.

An interim Road Fund Grant of £68,000 was allocated to Cork County Council on 11th February, 1957, for road improvement work up to 30th June. The usual 40 per cent. main road upkeep grant was also notified. It was not possible to indicate the final amount of the improvement grants owing to various circumstances affecting the income of the Road Fund. The matter has now been fully considered and I propose to notify the balances of the grants to be made available to county councils in the near future.

I wonder would the Minister now instruct the Cork County Council that they should put into effect the ordinary road work which normally they would commence at this time of the year?

I am also interested in conveying that information and that instruction to all county councils as soon I can.
