Vol. 161 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Motor Car Prices.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will give details of the retail price of each make of car assembled here, and the retail price of similar models manufactured in Britain, exclusive of British purchase tax.

The maximum retail prices of motor cars are not the subject of a Price Control Order. I do not think it appropriate, therefore, that I should try to provide the information sought by the Deputy. A comparison between the retail price of a car assembled here with the retail price in Britain exclusive of purchase tax, would be very misleading, as the retail price in this country would be affected by the revenue duties on car aggregates imported for assembly which are, in a sense, equivalent to a purchase tax.
