Vol. 161 No. 9

Ceisteanna-Questions. Oral Answers. - Employment on Offaly Bogs.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the number of men employed by Bord na Móna on Offaly bogs on the latest available date in April, 1957, and in April, 1956.

In respect of the week ended 25th April, 1957, as compared with the corresponding week in 1956, I am informed by Bord na Móna that employment on the Offaly bogs showed a reduction of 389 men attributable to the decision taken last year to curtail the programme for electrical development, and a reduction of 75 men attributable to the exceptionally bad weather this spring which has retarded production on sod peat bogs. The total number employed during the week in question was 1,418 and the number employed in the corresponding week last year was 1,882.
