Vol. 161 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Salted and Smoked Fish Exports.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state the value of (1) salted fish exports, and (2) smoked fish exports, in the latest available statistics.

Domestic exports are brought to account by reference to the commodity descriptions specified in the Official Export List. This list does not distinguish salted fish and smoked fish as such and so, I regret, the exact particulars required are not available. "Fish, dried, salted or smoked, not canned" is the nearest description shown in the list: domestic exports of these amounted to £38,896 in the year 1956, and in the first quarter of 1957 they amounted to £43,173 compared with £20,647 in the first quarter of 1956.

The procedure hereto-fore was to give the two items separately. They are now given as one. Is it not possible to have the two separately?

I shall inquire into that and let the Deputy know.

That was really the question I asked—if they had been separated.
