asked the Taoiseach if he will state for 1955-56 the number of children in the Republic between the ages of 14 and 16 in unskilled industrial employment and not serving their time to any skilled trade or craft.
Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Children in Unskilled Industrial Employment.
The particulars asked for by the Deputy cannot be given for the Twenty-Six Counties for the year 1955-56. The latest available information which is relevant is that derived from the Census of Population, 1951.
On that occasion, out of 53,028 boys aged 14 or 15 years last birthday, 21,240 were returned as gainfully occupied and of these 2,902 were classed as "Apprentices, learners and professional students". The corresponding figures for girls were—total 51,351; gainfully occupied, 13,657; apprentices, learners and professional students, 1,949.
Particulars of the numbers in each individual occupation at each year of age 14 to 19 are given in Tables 7A and 7B of Volume II, Part II of the Report of the Census of Population, 1951, and for details I would refer the Deputy to that publication. I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to circulate in the Official Report a statement summarising the figures shown in these tables in respect of persons aged 14 and 15 years last birthday.
Following is the statement:—
